Decoding the Data Plate
This is an ongoing in-devour, please let me know is you find any exceptions to this information. (I’m using my Data Plate as a reference, see picture Data Plate)
If we could ever find a 1959 Imperial Production Option Code Book or Little white book as they are also called, it would show exactly what all the codes mean. If anyone ever finds one please share it with us. I have been looking everywhere for one of them. Until then, this is the next best thing.
Note: Early Data Plates can look different, see photo to the left. I don’t believe they had decided on a format of them until after they had produced several hundred cars.
A – Designates the A accessory package option. This meant your car would get:
1- 405 – One vanity mirror, that clips on to your passenger side sun visor, with the forward look logo on it.
2- 3062 – One set of 2 door guards for 2 door cars. (a removable edging around the doors, see picture).
3064 – One set of 4 door guards for 4 door cars.
3- 381 – One license plate frame.
These items are usually long gone after a short period of time and although your car no longer has them, your car had them when it hit the dealership floor. I still have the vanity mirror which is shown in the pictures to the left. Lou B. supplied pictures of his original door guards, but if anyone has the original factory rear license plate frame please send me a picture to post.
If the upper left area is blank and has no letter A then no Accessory package.

0122 Schedule Date
This is the Scheduled to build date 01 is the month 22 is the day. This is when the car and its options were set in stone as to start building the car and what options it would have. The build tag would be generated at this time also. Shortly after the scheduled date the car was to be built, anytime from that day or a week or more later (right now, I have records of, that day to a week later) to know the actual built and shipped date, you need the build tag which should be somewhere in your car. Most likely in the springs of one of the seats. My car was scheduled to build 1/22/59, built 1/29/59 and shipped 1/31/59. A build sheet, technically known as a “Production Record”, will give other information like the dealership of the car and more. ***You can get a build sheet directly from Chrysler for about $50.00 and in will have your cars info along with a copy of the microfilm copy of your build tag (see Build tag and Build sheet pictures). The build tag was a punch card technically called the “Imperial Production Ticket Form KA 1415”.
***Update, as of 3/17/2020 you no longer can get a build sheet from Chrysler, only the Production Ticket (Build Tag). I still recommend getting the one for your car. The full explanation on what to do to obtain one is on the Parts / Misc. page. They no longer charge for this service so it’s free.

7 – The Imperial assembly Plant at 8505 West Warren Avenue Dearborn, Michigan. (A build sheet from Chrysler will say “Imperial Assy-Detroit”) all 1959 Imperials we’re built at this plant accept the 7 Limousines that were sent to Ghia in Italy for special modifications.
1959 was the last year that Chrysler separated the build sequence by Model type. In 1960 all models were grouped together with a single starting number and ending number for the year.

ZZZ Outside Paint Codes
ZZZ – Fiesta Copper (this would normally be Copper Spice but it was a special color ordered from the factory. This was achieved by using the ZZZ Copper Spice formula but the pigment was altered to create a new version of that color). Please let me know if your factory build sheet has a different name then what is listed below, as it too would be a special order color from the factory and I would like to add it to the list.
The first letter is the top color of the car.
The second letter is the bottom color of the car from the middle door trim down.
The third letter is any insert color on the car.
Here is a list of areas I’ve seen this applied to.
1-The faux tire portion of the Flitesweep trunk lid.
2-The rear section of the roof on hardtop models if it doesn’t have the Landau option.
3-The gas intake cover.
V in the third letter spot designated the black leather textured Landau option found only on the back section of the roof on hardtop models only.
Imperial Crown Convertibles and LeBaron Models came in solid colors only.

Groups of Letters
The groups of letters to follow are the biggest challenge to decode. There is little information out there, and believe me I’ve been looking everywhere. No decoding books and few living experts, Chrysler Historical claims they have no records except build tickets. So, we are left to coming up with theories of what they mean by process of comparing commonalities and differences of the vin tags and factory options information I’m gathering from all you folks. Because this website exists, we have the resources to gather that information unlike anyone before us, so with all of your help we can decipher this code. Everything below is just theory, compare it to your VIN tag and options to prove the theories wrong or correct. We value your input, we won’t be offended if you disprove a theory, and it will only help our research. It’s all about process of elimination. Let us know either way.
Update: 6/24/22 I had received a lead from a fellow 1959 Imperial member Chris Webb. Chris received an e-mail from Chrysler Historical recommending a person that is a Mopar historical code Expert that may be helping us fill in the missing information. Stay tuned.

S Special Order
We have a new theory. This could designate Special order, or Special Instructions.
It would also explain why it’s the last code on the bottom right of the Date Plate. A good place to put (See Supplemental Information).
See the picture of a 1959 Chrysler build ticket on the above left of this page, it too has a Special Instructions section on the bottom right area of the build ticket.
S – In my car’s case it had a special order of paint color that the factory had to rename (Fiesta Copper) using the ZZZ Copper Spice formula but adjusting the pigment to alter the color. The build sheet confirms this was done at the factory.
I believe this could designate anytime the customer had a special order that would need additional information, probably from the original Sales sheet from the dealership, or the Build Ticket.
If your car’s Data Plate has the S try to find something that may have been special ordered from the dealership at the request of the original buyer.
Could be Solex Glass with shaded windshield ???
Could be Sure-Grip Differential ????
It has ruled out that it could mean Silvercrest roof option.
